The Principle of Power Generation

A solar cell is made by bringing into close proximity a layer of n-type silicon with a layer of p-type silicon, each having different electrical properties. This area is known as the "p-n junction."

When sunlight hits a solar cell, the light is absorbed into the solar cell. The absorbed light energy generates positively and negatively charged molecules ("holes" and "electrons," respectively) that move freely within the solar cell.

Electrons (-) tend to gather on the n-type side, while holes (+) tend to gather on the p-type side. Because of this, when a load such as a light bulb or motor is connected to the electrodes placed on both sides, a current will start to flow.
